| ASHBURTON. THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN THOMAS EALES ROGERS, aged 69, took
place at his country residence, Way House, near this town, on Monday.
In his time he had seen much service in the East; he entered the Indian
Navy in 1818, was at the storming of the pirate town of Rasel-Kaima, engaged
in surveys of the Persian Gulf and Red Sea until 1837, when he was made
commander. From 1839 to 1841 he was on service in China, for which he
received the warm thanks of the Government of Bombay. In 1846 he was appointed
Superintendent of the Marine Department of Calcutta, during which time
he effected great improvements in the communications with different parts
of the East. The gallant Captain from a residence of nearly forty years
in India and the East, during which he had filled many important positions,
was eminently qualified to give most valuable information for the government
of that country. After returning to his native country he was presented with two elegant silver vases with covers, beautifully chased and richly gilt, and bearing the following inscription: "Presented to Captain T. E. Rogers, I.N., Superintendent of the Bengal Marine, on his retirement in October 1857, by officers and men of the Department over which he presided for more than ten years, in testimony of their sense of his justice and impartiality towards them, of his untiring energy and conspicuous zeal for the public service, and as a memento of their respect, esteem, and lasting good wishes." In his death the poor and various institutions have lost a firm friend. His charity and benevolence was of a really practical character, he always accompanying his gifts in the winter season with something substantial. His Christianity went further than saying "Be ye warmed," for he gave the poor yearly a good supply of coals. He had been married four times, and now leaves a widow with two children, and two sons by former wives. He is to be buried on Saturday in the vault ordered by him in the parish churchyard. | The Western Times • 16 May 1873 |
