J. Carlyon, Esq., coroner reported that the deceased, it appeared, had formed an attachment for a young girl of the place, to which her grandmother with whom she lived was opposed, and she in accordance with her grandmother's wishes refused to keep him company, which caused great excitement on the young man's mind, and in that state in the morning of the 27th, about 8 o'clock, he went to the house of the grandmother, where she and the granddaughter were, and speaking to the latter, said "now Jane, shake hands with me for the last time;" and he having in his other hand a pistol, the granddaughter became so frightened that she ran out of the house, leaving her grandmother and the deceased in the house together. Upon that, the deceased, placing the pistol to his breast, discharged it, and threw himself back in the chair as if he had shot himself. The pistol however, could only have been charged with powder, as no injury was done by its being put off, and in a short time the deceased left the house, and running over a hill to some rocks under a cliff called Carrackdew, threw himself into the sea and was drowned. –Evidence was given of the very excited state in which the deceased was on the preceding evening, in consequence of the young girl having given her company to some other young man, upon which the deceased said, rather than she should go with that young man, he would kill her. The jury, believing that the deceased laboured under a temporary aberration of mind, returned their verdict accordingly. |
