| The Morning Union Grass Valley, Cal., March 12, 1924 RICHARD TOY FOUND DEAD IN REAR OF STORE Man Without Relatives or Effects Dies Soon After Return to Grass Valley Richard Toy, former miner and idler, was found dead at the rear entrance of the Israel James soft drink parlor yesterday afternoon. The body was discovered by Mr. James when he opened his establishment a short time before noon. According to the coroner, the body had been dead for about six hours when discovered. An autopsy was performed yesterday afternoon by Dr. Jones, who discovered that a hemorrhage was brought on by an advanced case of tuberculosis. Very little is known about Richard Toy here. It was discovered that he lived here a few years ago, and worked in the mines. Later he left, and is supposed to have lived in Sacramento until his return here a short time ago. Since returning, he was generally seen loitering around the various soft drink parlors. According to one source of information, he was working in some capacity for Israel James, at his parlor at the time of his death. Up to last night, no trace of relatives could be found here. No one knew where the dead man had lived or roomed, and no information concerning him could be obtained. Coroner Thomas M. Harris sent a telegram last night to Mrs. John Dingle, of Bisbee, Arizona, thought to be a sister of the deceased. Until word is received from her, the matter of disposition of the remains will not be decided. No possessions or effects of the dead man can be found. He was penniless, and investigation yesterday revealed that he possessed no property, so far as could be learned. Big Book "Record of Burials in Greenwood Cemetery, Grass Valley 1867-1930"... Richard G. Toye, aged 49 years, 10 months, 17 days. * Today we know that this is Richard George TOYE. His NY Passenger List of 1906 confirms his age and that he did indeed have a sister in Bisbee, Arizona. And a brother in law, John M. Dingle. She must have been located in time to give the specific age. He was a native of England and had last resided in Hayle. In 1924, just prior to returning to Grass Valley, we find him in Sacramento on K street, working at a “soft drink” parlor of some sort. From Contributor #47463714: Richard George Toye left England around the turn of the 20th century. He traveled originally to Bisbee, Arizona where he worked in the mines and was joined by his wife and child where they were recorded in the 1910 census in Bisbee. Something went wrong and Clara and Richard were next recorded in the British 1911 census - no sign of Richard George. I have recently found evidence that he was rejected for service in a recruitment drive in Grass Valley for the first world war in 1918. |
