My name is Clare Rosevear and live in Christchurch New Zealand. My late husband was Bernard James Rosevear, and his father, born and bred in Cornwall about the late 1800’s, was Leonard James Rosevear. I was told the family owned a ship’s Chandler in Parr, as well as his father holding some position in the local church. Apparently his father gave his children the opportunity to immigrate where ever they chose in the world, and paid their passage. Members of the family chose America, Australia, and New Zealand. How true any of this is I would love to know so I could pass it on to my family.

Brilliant research and lovely to read. I am descended from the Smetherham Family who I believe originated in Germoe Cornwall. They moved up to Millom when Mining boomed in the area. I notice the previous post in the guest book from Samantha, who must be related to me ?? I am happy for you to pass my email to her if she wants to make contact.

Thank you so much for posting the smetheram family tree!! It is incredible to finally see a family tree with my very eyes, Im 20 years old and I’ve always been interested in my family history. My dad is from Barrow-In-Furness and so is his mom and I’ve always been told by my grandma about her family. Her grandpa was from Millom and taught at St. George Church before him and his family moved to Barrow-In-Furness in 1930 and use to make my grandma her shoes until she was 12. (1951)

Fantastic amount of work you have done and you have cracked a long-standing problem in my Rowett tree. Jane Rowett (nee Eady) , who married Joseph Rowett is my 3x G grandma. I am trying to go further back in her ancestry as my mitochondrial dna shows a Scandinavian root! Who knows how they ended up in Cornwall though, I can only guess. There was a rumour of a linkage to the Bone family which I could never find but see in your research she remarried late on in life to Alexander Bone! Amazing to think the Rowett’s in Cornwall can be traced back to 1589, possibly.

I have enjoyed looking at the Smitheram family tree. I am Mary Ann Smetheram's granddaughter. She is my third great-grandmother. I have attached my family tree for your to look at. I have had a DNA match with Christopher Smitheam born in 1698. The family continues further to the famous Prideaux family - 3 generations. My great great grandmother in New Zealand was Sarah Welch Smitheram B:04 Sep 1857 Camborne, Cornwall, England D:11 May 1926 Alford Forest, Ashburton, Canterbury, New Zealand Her father was John Welsh and her mother was Mary Ann Smetheram. I hope you can add this to your published info on your web.

So then, Obviously we will be related.

Another Hamill descendant here, from the Yorkshire branch, specifically the ones who ended up in Rothwell/Lofthouse. I am the 3 x great-granddaughter of Sarah Hamill & William Plows. I see a number of comments here from people who are interested in the Yorkshire Hamills, but most of them go back a few years, so I’m not going to try to contact them now. I have a tree and DNA test on Ancestry, or can be emailed at hamill@finecourse.co.uk.

Most of my ancestors have stayed in the same bit of Yorkshire for hundreds of years, so it was really interesting to find these rather more exotic Huguenots!

Two sisters from the WILLIAMS family, Elizabeth Body and Sopia Bawden married and emmigrated to New Zealand in the 1880's. Information from your site has assisted greatly in compiling family charts. Congratulations on the site. My mother was a PELLOW and descended from John Pellow who emmigrated to Australia in 1857. I have accumulated quite a bit of data on the family history and for information prior to the 18th century I have relied very much on the 'Pellows of Penryn' by Dr E.F.Pellowe, 1964. Now that the Cornwall parish registers have been digitized and are online, it has been wonderful to cross check his data and fill in many dates, and add some bits as well.

I have been tracing my family of Smithams for many years and I got stuck at William who married Jane Warren on 16 Oct 1803. I presumed the parents were John and Phillis but had not confirmed things from there. I am absolutely over the moon to see your fantastic website which confirms everything I have which follows through from John and Phillis, William and Jane Warren having Matthew Smythram 1815 who married Jane Hockin and had John Smethram b. 1845 who did marry Elizabeth Ann Oates and hence called the son Nicholas Oates Smetherem. b. 1877 Dukinfielld, Chesthire who ultimately married Jane Connor in June qtr 1906 in Whitehaven. She was from Ireland. They had my grandma Ruth Smitham who married John Edward Huddart in Whitehaven who had my mother Audrey nee Huddart who married my father Colin Stechman and coming down to me Carol Stechman. I will get together everything I can for you and send you full details shortly but just to say that I can't thank you enough for all your hard work. Although my mum is a Huddart, she was brought up by her grandma Jane nee Connor after Nicholas died and my great Uncle Stanley Smitham who was a lovely man and a miner (of course) in Whitehaven.

I am completely new to researching family history. My four grandparents' names were Frank Harding Ansell and Henrietta nee Andrewartha on my father's side and William Davy Thomas and Ada Mary nee Berryman (?? Berriman etc.) on my mother's side. I have researched a bit of the Andrewartha family and a bit of the Berryman family because they are less common names and hence easier. My grandfather William Davy Thomas' mother was a Vingoe (one of the names in your extensive list). I also notice a 'Luke' connection which I have come across in the Andrewartha part of my research. I also recognise a load of other surnames in your list. It seems to me that all of these families are / were effectively related to one another! People didn't move very far, I guess, to find a wife / husband before the days of the railways and then not very much well into the 20th. Century. Thank you for sharing all your extensive work.

The father, Joseph Dutch, of my great granmother, Eliza Cardew Dutch, married Martha Symonds James, March 13th 1815. Martha was born in Helston on 26th December 1788 Martha's father was Richard James, born Breage on 23rd October 1763. Her mother, I believe to be Mary Shugg, born St Ives, 19th Oct 1763. Richard's father, I believe to be Joseph James, born Breage on 16th March 1734. Symonds was another family in Breage and Marha's parents obviously wanted to keep the name alive. In the same way my great grandmother was given a middle name of Cardew, another Breage family though by the 19th century there was only one family there. Congrats on an excellent piece of research.

Great site. Well researched, simply laid out and easy to follow. I was looking on behalf of David Hammill of Dubbo for his Cornish family who came to South Australia in 1847. I will pass this information and website details onto him. His line appears to come via Bennet Hammell who married Izable, James who married Margaret Hingston, to John who married Martha Luke in Redruth in 1794, Joshua christened 1814 in Redruth. Joshua married an Elizabeth (possibly Harris) c 1833 and the couple emigrated to Australia in 1847. David is researching the Australian branch. I only wish my Orchards/Wills/Craze from Illogan tapped into such a terrific site.

In 1940 along with a number of other children from my school in the east end of London, I was evacuated to St Mawgan. I stayed with a family named Force, but one of my friends at that time, John Baker, was billeted on the farm of Farmer Rowe. During the summer of 1940 St Mawgan RAF aerodrome came under the attention of the Luftwaffe and the Force family thought it better if I returned to London, which I did. I recently discovered a website which was a day to day diary of the Battle of Britain and mention was made of RAF St Eval but not St Mawgan. This made me interested to find out more about St Mawgan and I came across your website whilst "trawling" through a number of pages of links to St.Mawgan. All of the above may be of little or no interest to you and if that is the case I apologise. Sincerely

Thank you for an interesting site. As the great-great grand-daughter of Elizabeth Smetham of Leigh in Lancashire (b 1831), who in turn was great granddaughter of James Smetham (m c 1741). I am trying to establish whether the Lancashire branch of the family came to the county from elsewhere. Smethams don’t seem to have been in Lancashire earlier than the mid to late 18thC. I wonder if they came to the North West of England from Cornwall, where the name seems to be a place name. If you happen to have any information on Smethams who left Cornwall, I would be very grateful.

Glad to have found this site as my father Norman Carrivick had tried to find out about the name many years ago and had traced it back to 1327 when the name was originally Crou.In that year a franc Crou actually had to pay a tax of 12pence!
My grandfather was Stephen Carrivick and lived in Plymouth where he had 6 brothers and sisters.

Well done
